Special Needs Dental Care

For a variety of reasons, children with special needs may occasionally require treatment by a dentist who specialises in their care. Those reasons include such situations as:

  • Certain disabilities, such as Down Syndrome or syndromes involving craniofacial anomalies, may cause a child to be more susceptible to dental problems.
  • Some drugs, such as anti-seizure medication, may contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Parents of children with physical or cognitive disabilities may have difficulty providing daily dental care at home.
  • Finding a qualified dentist may be more difficult for children with physical or cognitive disabilities.

Children with craniofacial anomalies, or differences in the development of their oral and facial structure, may require visits to a specialist such as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or plastic surgeon for dental care.
